Sweet Ira Schoolgirl ^NEW^
C'mon, admit it...you've got a serious crush on Ira Glass of This American Life. Maybe it's an intellectual bromance, maybe it's a schoolgirl geek chic sweet-on-you kind of thing. You know it's the voice (who else can say "From Chicago Public Radio, this is..." and make you grin?) but how about in the flesh? Well, we can't guarantee you just how close to the flesh you'll get, but we can let you know that in late March you'll have the chance to get at least in the same room as Ira Glass, as KCRW presents "A Night With Ira Glass: Radio Stories and Other Stories" at UCLA's Royce Hall. The show "offers a look behind the scenes of This American Life and goes even deeper. Ira talks personally about the show, its origins, his influences and the elements that make a good story." As an audience member at this one-night only event, you will also have the opportunity to turn the tables on Glass and ask him questions. Glass will do two shows in the same evening and tickets will be available first just to KCRW subscribers. (We erroneously reported tickets would be first available to only subscribers, however that is not true--anyone can get their ticket on the 16th. But, hey, become a subscriber anyhow. It's a good thing!)

Strictly speaking, many of the 32 tracks on the 2018 compilation The Ballads of Fats Domino are not ballads. They're blues and slow-rolling R&B, songs that seem to define the Big Easy sound of Fats: "Blueberry Hill," "Blue Monday," "One Night," "Poor Me, "Before I Grow Too Old," "Natural Born Lover," and "I Hear You Knocking." They're surrounded by lots of songs that could conceivably be called ballads, but the feel of the comp isn't sweet and anodyne. Some of the tempos may be slow, but this is an R&B and rock & roll record through and through; it just happens to lean toward an easier roll. That sustained feel is appealing, as is the fact that this compilation is filled with songs that aren't hits but aren't slouches either. For some listeners, this may be a good way to launch an exploration of his classic Imperial period. 041b061a72
